The NHS Library provides a comprehensive collection of instructional and research materials, including print, eBooks, and electronic resources. The web-based catalog system enables students and faculty to search the collection of over 20,000 books, videos/DVDs and other instructional materials. Students may use our 75 computers (47 Apple desktops, 30 Chromebooks) for research, projects, and academic inquiry. The Library staff instructs classes and tutors individual students in the use of these educational resources and tools. Students are expected to use the Library for class assignments, independent research, and project development. Whenever possible, students should print materials from home. Saving work to your Google Drive is encouraged. There are 2 black and white printers available in the library when needed. For additional information on appropriate use of technology, review the Responsible Use Policy (RUP).

Instructional Areas
  • Library Classroom: seating for 28, SmartBoard, instructor computer, 30 Chromebooks (print to library printers)
  • Left and Right Library Floor Spaces: 6 tables, 24+ seats, TV monitor (right side only), 13+ desktop computers (print to library printers)
Load Periods
Student loan periods of library materials are as follows, unless by special arrangement:
  • Fiction and Nonfiction books (general collection): 2 weeks
  • Non-print Materials (videos, CDs, records): 1 week
  • Magazines: 1 week
  • Critical Materials: 3 nights
  • Reference Books: overnight (must be returned before first block on the following school day)
  • Project Materials: overnight or as requested by the teacher
Students may place a hold on materials by logging into Destiny or making a request at the circulation desk. When the material is available, a notice will be sent to the student's email and the student will have 2 days to come to the library to check it out.

Overdue Material
Borrowing library materials is a privilege; returning them is a responsibility as well as an act of courtesy to others who may need the materials. Students borrowing materials are responsible for returning and/or replacing materials charged to his/her name. Overdue Notices will be delivered to student and parent email addresses on record. Outstanding obligations will result in borrowing privileges being withdrawn immediately. Outstanding obligations at the end of the year will be billed to the student. Seniors may pick up their cap and gown for graduation only when obligations are cleared.

Independent Use of the Library
  • Students are expected to behave appropriately in the library and not distract others working in the Library.
  • School passes may be issued by classroom or study teachers. The issuing teacher keeps a log of students sent to the library.
  • Each students from study must have an individual School Pass, signed by a teacher, complete with student name, date and time.
  • Students must leave the pass at the circulation desk and sign in at the iPads (time stamped).
  • Students must sign out when their work is completed and a member of the library staff will sign the pass before the student returns to the issuing teacher.
  • During first and last block, study teachers may send up to 5 students to the library with individual passes. During second, third and fourth blocks, study teachers may send up to 2 students. Teachers wishing to send more students should call the Circulation Desk at the library (x2448) to see if there is room.
  • Students do not need passes before school, after school, or during an open block and are welcome to stay in the library if space is available.
  • All students must sign into and out of the library on the iPads during the school day, even if only leaving for a few minutes

Security Violations
Any attempts to alter computer programs will be considered an act of vandalism. Any attempt to remove library materials without following the checkout procedure is considered a serious offense. Disciplinary action will be taken when students violate the security system. This includes the removal of bar codes and/or security stickers, and placing materials in other students' bags.

Please abide by the NHS food policy. Food must be eaten only in the cafeteria. Beverages with a lid are allowed. If there is a spill, please visit the circulation desk for cleaning materials. The library has a water fountain.

Purchase Requests
Students and Faculty are encouraged to make suggestions for the purchase of books, periodicals and materials for the Library. These suggestions will be given serious consideration within the confines of the available budget available and the appropriateness of the material.
The NHS Library is open Monday through Thursday, 7:30 to 3:30 and Fridays 7:30 to 3:00
