The NHS Library provides
a comprehensive collection of instructional
and research materials, including print, non-print,
and electronic resources. The
web-based catalog system enables students
and faculty to searching the collection of 24,000 books,
videos/DVDs and other
instructional
materials. Students may use our
41 research
computers
which are completely
networked and Internet accessible. The
Library staff instructs classes and tutors
individual students
in the use of
these educational resources and technologies.
Students are expected to use the Library
for class assignments,
independent
research,
and project development.
BORROWING
MATERIALS
Student loan periods of Library
materials (unless by special arrangement):
- Books
- 2 weeks
- Non-print-
1 week (videos, CDs, records)
- Magazines
- 1 week
- Special
Reserve - 1 week or as requested by the teacher (designated
project books in high demand)
Books
and materials designated for overnight circulation must
be returned before first block on the following school
day.
Students may reserve
materials by making a request at the circulation desk. When the material
is returned, a
notice will be sent to the student's homeroom and the student will
have 2 days to come to the library to sign it out.
LIBRARY
FACILITY
lnstructional
Areas -
There are multiple instructional areas in the Library: the
Library classroom
and 3 table areas. "Reserved"
signs indicate tables and computers reserved for classes; students
from study are welcome to use areas not reserved.
Computer and Electronic Research Areas
- Scheduled
classes have priority use of the computers; study hall
students always have 8 computers reserved
for their use. They may use additional computers
if available.
- LAPTOP
computers are available for students in scheduled classes,
under the supervision of a teacher. Each laptop must be
signed out by
the
individual student, who is responsible
for its use and safe return.
- Electronic
research takes priority over word processing tasks.
- Playing
games, visiting chatrooms and using instant messenger are
never allowed; email for purposes other than
school is prohibited.
All
students must have a signed Acceptable Use Policy on file to use computers
during a study, before school or after school.
Conference Room - The small meeting room is available
for adult-sponsored meetings with an adult in attendance
Copy Machine -
A photocopy machine is available at 10
cents per page; it is for the copying of reference
books that do not circulate. When a class is scheduled
in the
Library, class members may be given complimentary
copies. Students needing multiple copies of papers for
class projects
should plan
on getting copies at a copy center.
Use of the Printers -
Whenever possible, students should print materials at
home by emailing research materials, or saving
files to
their flash
drives.
Students may print 3-4 pages of class assignments
and research materials if they need the copies immediately
for class.
If students need to print long files, they must first
ask permission from a member of the Library staff.
LIBRARY
PROCEDURES
Security
Violations - Any attempts to alter computer programs
will be considered an act of vandalism. Any attempt to remove
library materials without following the checkout procedure is considered
a serious
offense. Disciplinary
action will be taken when students violate the security system. This
includes the removal of bar codes and/or security stickers, and placing
materials
in other students' bags.
Independent
Use of the Library
- Students
are expected to work on research projects in the Library.
- Gold colored school passes may be issued by classroom teachers or study hall teachers.
The issuing teacher keeps
a log of students sent to the library..
- Each students
from study will have an individual Library Pass, signed by a teacher,
complete with student name,
date, time and project.
- Students will
leave the pass at the desk and sign in on
the log sheet, noting the
topic of their assignment and time arrived.
- Students will
sign out when their work is completed, noting the time; a member of
the library staff will sign
the pass, with the student returning the signed pass to study/issuing teacher.
- Teachers wishing
to send more than 5 students should call the Circulation Desk at the
library (x2438) to
see if there is room.
- SENIORS who have
open campus privileges are welcome to come to the library to do work
if space is available and do not
need a pass. They must sign in and out on the log sheet for the period.

Delinquent
Borrowers - Borrowing library materials is
a privilege; returning them is a responsibility as well as an act of courtesy
to others
who may
need the materials.
- Students borrowing
materials are responsible for returning and/or replacing materials
charged
to his/her name.
- Overdue notices
are delivered to students in homerooms.
- Outstanding obligations
will result in borrowing privileges being withdrawn immediately.
- Outstanding obligations
at the end of the year will interrupt the issuing of the student's
schedule for the
next year. Seniors may pick up their cap and gown when the
obligation is cleared.
Food - Please abide by the NHS food policy - food must be eaten only in the cafeteria. Clear
water in
bottles with screw caps is the only drink allowed; open drinks must never
be at the
computer workstations. The library has a water fountain.
Rule Violations -
Students violating library rules will lose their library
privileges and may be assigned detention.
Purchase
Requests - Students and Faculty are encouraged to make suggestions for
the purchase of books, periodicals and materials for the Library . These
suggestions will be given serious consideration within the confines of the
budget available and following the Needham Public Schools Selection Policy |
